Home?

It has been a whirlwind of events and emotions since the ball dropped this new year. Much of which, has had to do with our upcoming relocation to Florida's panhandle-- Researching school districts, preschools, neighborhoods, youth soccer....comparing/mapquesting commutes to Hurlburt Field and all other essential, frequented places. I am a planner (surprise!), therefore, I like to try and learn as much as possible in advance; right down to my grocery store (and where the nearest Loft will be :) A friend whose husband is in AFIT with Ryan knows a family living in Navarre and connected us. Military are so quick to help one another and she has been amazing at answering ALL my questions.

With an April 1 move-in date, we were planning to travel down to FL in mid-February to look at homes. However, this trip got pushed up after finding one with great potential online. With Ryan on Mr. Mom duty for two days, I went by myself to Navarre.

Here are some things I learned on my trip:

1. The panhandle is on central time, unlike the rest of Florida.

2. I will still wake up in the night even without a baby to feed.

3. Learning my way around Navarre will probably be a breeze since there is one main road (which parallels the ocean) to go anywhere and everywhere.

4. I think I can get used to the warmer temperatures very quickly.

5. If I turn left out of our street and drive straight for 2 miles, my car will be submerged in the crystal waters of the Gulf. Yes, it is that close.

6. Looks aren't everything

7. If you are hungry enough, peanuts that spilled in your purse will taste great!

8. I will have to try and convert from a Target shopper to a Walmart shopper for convenience.

9. Southern hospitality definitely extends as far south as the Gulf coast.

10. It is amazing how much more you can accomplish without children in tow. I felt like I was moving at light speed.

Excluding travel time, I was really only in Navarre for just over 24 hours. I took advantage of every minute to learn/absorb as much as I could. When I bought a sub for lunch, I talked to the employees about preschools and neighborhoods. I took a walk through the nearest Publix to scope out my future grocery shopping experiences (which is lovely). I visited the preschool where Hayden is registered to complete the remainder of this school year (and will register Logan for next). I visited the elementary school where he will attend K next year. I learned about the bus route and that we are first on the stop (good for the afternoons, bad for the mornings). I woke up early and drove Ryan's commute from 'our' house, through the gate, to his office. I chatted with a local cop about the safety in our potential neighborhood. I made friends with the hotel staff, one of whom, lives in 'our' neighborhood. I knocked on the doors of three future neighbors to introduce myself. I visited the clubhouse, exercise room, swimming pool that is part of our community and talked with the ladies who would watch the boys while I workout.

I was trying to gather the 20/20 hindsight in advanced--hoping to prevent a phrase starting with, 'well, I wished we.....if we had known....' coming from my mouth in a year.

But, I started to second guess the house that brought me down there in the first place and had an agent show me another.

Which confused me.

So, I returned to the hotel to search online for other homes.

Which confused me further.

Does this all sound scrambled; that was how I felt. My thoughts racing with my emotions.

With all the above accomplished by Friday mid-afternoon, I drove 35 minutes away to visit a friend, Lou Ellen. She and I taught in the same school in Baumholder, Germany, lived 20 minutes apart in NJ and now will again, share an assignment in FL. She and her family have been in FL for a couple of years already. They are stationed at a base near Hurlburt and therefore, live more inland. I fell in love with their community which of course, confused me more. But boy, was it a blessing to see a familiar face amidst all the newness. She kindly let me talk, rant and debate all my decisions.

Truly, I felt drained and conflicted about where we would be happiest living. Then, before driving to the airport, I drove 5 minutes from our community and saw this:

Suddenly, the anxiety vanished and I was overwhelmed with all the wonderful memories will be create living so close to the shore. I had clarity. The vastness of the ocean seemed to engulf my worries. I knew which town, neighborhood and house we should choose.

After all is said and done, I came full circle and we are sticking with our gut; the house that brought me down to Florida in the first place (a huge sigh of relief to Ryan, who was a trooper as I shared this 'journey' with him via phone). The neighborhood has quite a wonderful reputation and many military do rent/buy within it. It is big (3 x 5 miles approx). To me, this lacks intimacy. There wasn't a charm (to me) about the neighborhood, but I think it will be a good fit.

After viewing this house online a couple of weeks prior, what excited us about it immediately is that it sits on a cul-de-sac. Then we saw this picture online and knew we had to see it in person: (excuse the captions--I got them off the website)

So, this will home as of April 1.
A few minutes drive:

A house is made with walls and beams. A home is made with love and dreams.

Of course, if I'm living with my four 'men' I suppose I will always be 'home.'

Indoor Fun

We are missing the warmer temperatures when after nap we'd simply step outside our front door, meet up with friends and play until dinner! To pass these chilly days we are:

Playing with slime/practicing cutting

Making english muffiin pizzas

Dance Parties with the Dance Cam (this is a camera that projects the kids on tv) See Logan in the background holding his finger up and tilting his head? This is how he looks whenever he says, "don't look at me mommy.' Just before he does something he's not supose to do. This time it was getting into the dvds. I appreciate the advanced warning. :)

And of course, Hayden and Logan's biggest fan who looks on at all the fun!

NOTE: Hayden always wants to take off his shirt to keep it clean, hence, all the naked tummies.

Frogs & Monkeys!

Both Hayden and Logan adore a cuddly stuff animal they received from Uncle Ross and Aunt Darci years ago.  For Hayden, it is a frog and for Logan, it is a monkey.  They both are quite floppy from all the love/hugs they receive.  These two pals are a MUST for bedtime.

It was fitting that a few years ago we snatched up a froggy umbrella for Hayden.  For Christmas, Logan received a monkey umbrella.  They had fun playing in the rain on the driveway the other day.

Big Boy!

This past week Owen started eating baby oatmeal.  At nearly every meal, he sits on my knee and wildly swings his arms and legs while chewing on his fists and making cooing noises of envy!  We are hoping this means we will have another easy eater on our hands.  He is getting the coordination down of  'chewing' and swallowing.  Most of all, he just seems so tickled to be included!  Big brothers were excited to oversee.

He also started rolling to his side, reaching for a toy and bringing it to his mouth.

Captured!

Owen smiles all the time, but I've had trouble capturing it on camera.  We recently purchased an SLR camera.  We LOVE the clarity of the pictures but it is a more bulky camera.  As soon as I try to focus behind the camera, Owen's grin quickly changes to a slightly concerned look.

But, Ryan captured this big smile on his IPhone about a month ago.

An Oldie But Goodie

Ryan recently downloaded some pictures from his IPhone onto our computer.  I forgot about this picture he took in August of the two boys standing in front of Mater who was at a local car show.

Daddy Day

While staying at my parent's house in Maryland over the holidays, Ryan took Hayden into DC to explore a couple of museums.  My father dropped them off at the metro station; the train ride was a lot of fun for Hayden!  It was nice for them to be able to move at a 5 year old pace which is much faster than with a 2.5 year old and baby in tow!

Unfortunately, no pictures were taken of the two of them.

Four Months

Owen is four months today!!!!  He continues to bless our home with smiles and a gentle spirit.

Getting big!!!  He loves to spend time in the jump-er-roo!

First Snow

Yesterday was the first snow of the season.  It was merely a dusting but this did not diminish the excitement of two little boys.  It took quite some time to layer the boys in clothes.  (they really cannot move as quick with snowpants, boots and layer after layer on top...hmmm.... :)

Ryan was at work and I didn't want to take Owen out in the cold weather so he and I nestled by the window to watch.

We have a VERY small hill in the field behind our house.  Armed with saucers, they made their way to the 'hill.'  Logan was a bit skeptical about all this; although, after one ride down, he was hooked.  For over an hour they took turns pushing each other down the hill; sometimes sharing a saucer for the ride down which always ended in giggles.  They couldn't seem to climb the hill fast enough. I remember that eagerness from sledding with my sister as a child.

Snow brings such a softness to the Earth. I love how it muffles sound, as if commanding your attention to its beauty and purity.  I really wanted to be outdoors with them and capture pictures but there was something special about watching from afar.

Two brothers sledding, falling, crashing, climbing, helping, giggling in a beautiful dance on a stage of white.

They can't wait to go out again....

Cheeks all rosy

Hot chocolate and popcorn awaited their return.
