I returned from a run the other day and found this scene in our garage. (if you look closely you'll notice Logan behind Hayden--Owen was napping)
Every year cub scouts host a pinewood derby race. Each scout is given a block of pine, four plastic wheels and four metal axils. They can carve/cut the wood into any shape they wish. It will be weighed on race day and needs to be under and as close to 5 ounces. Small weights can be added to the car to compensate for weight. Ryan drilled some holes in the bottom, inserted a small weight and then plugged with a piece of wood. This is quite involved but these 3 have had a blast! Thankful that I have a handy husband who enjoys this stuff. After all, an annual pinewood derby event x 3 boys = lots of car creating in our future! There are lots of lessons Ryan is teaching the boys as they go along--friction, tool safety, weights/measurements etc.
Logan is too young to be a scout but they have a category at the end of the event which allows siblings/non-scouts to race.
Ryan will be deployed and unable to attend the race later this month but all this quality time together on a joint project has come at a perfect place.
