Last weekend we entered a time-machine; or at least it felt like that. Despite rather desperately missing the cold temperatures in the late fall and around the holidays, I have now embraced the chilly mornings and t-shirt/pants weather in the afternoon which affords us outdoor activities.
We drove just under an hour away to the Naval Air Base in Pensacola. With spring-like temperatures and a picnic lunch in hand we were ready for an adventure and that is exactly what we experienced. We visited some of the forts that were built in the mid-1800's. European colonization, American expansion and threats of invasion lead to the building of these coastal forts along the northern Gulf Coast.
The boys were able to navigate through the mess of tunnels underground as well as peer through the loopholes up high.

If you look closely you'll see Ryan, Hayden & Logan down in the moat
Waiting safely above ground while brothers and Daddy explored tunnels.
Stopped for a picnic lunch before exploring another fort.
Awaiting our next adventure....
