Watch out for these two! They are becoming experts at navigating their way through a fort full of tunnels and dark passage ways. We went to Fort Pickens over the weekend. This fort was completed in 1834 and remained in use until 1947It is about 30 minutes away. These two couldn't wait to start exploring!
But first we had another picnic lunch. Owen multi-tasked and walked around while eating.
Up on top of a battery (a couple of miles from Fort Pickens---there are many batteries within the area)
I had to snap this quickly (Ryan and the boys are waving from the top) and run and grab Owen. My job was keeping Owen off the stairs.
On either side of the tall tower are two recessed areas which housed cannons that could fire between 7 and 9 miles away.
We live on such a narrow strip of land between the bay and the sound/Gulf (only several miles) that we only have one main road (Hwy 98) to get EVERYWHERE! You are either traveling east or west on this one road. There is one exception. A road that travels along the beach and connects Navarre to Pensacola. This was closed after Hurricane Issac but was recently reopened. We drove home this route and it was lovely.
This was the view out one window....
And this was out the other....
